TREASURES, COLLECTIBLES & RARITIES

PULP MAGAZINES

These are the publications Quentin Tarantino was referring to when he titled his film PULP FICTION! Violent, lighting-paced, plot-driven tales packed the pages of these magazines, which ran primarily from the '20s to the '50s. They were predicated on sensation, loaded with surprises, and rippled with sex appeal! Covers exploded with primary colors visualizing masked heroes, long-stemmed gun molls, iron-jawed Mounties, seductive senoritas, hell-spawned monsters, hardboiled cops, busty space sirens, leather-tough lawmen--and undressed damsels in distress!

Tarzan, Zorro, Buck Rogers and hundreds of even more outrageous characters all had their origins in the pulps. The form ultimately mutated into comics and paperbacks, then disappeared in the mid-'50s. All that remains of them today exists primarily in personal collections; their number diminishes by the year. This monthly list will offer some of the rarest and most collectible pulps, in addition to those which are more common. All are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

A grading designation accompanies each item. Read carefully:

VF = VERY FINE

F = FINE

NF = NEAR FINE

VG = VERY GOOD

G = GOOD

FA = FAIR

P = POOR

Clean, bright copy with few flaws, natural aging
Tight copy, very minor wear, minute cover tears, creases, or chips
Tight collectible copy, slight rubbing, chips, tears, small pieces out
Some cover and spine wear, some tears, chips, etc.
Obvious wear, pieces out and tears up to an inch, cover creases
Considerable wear, rubbing, chips, critical pieces missing, etc.
Seriously damaged, reading copy only

Grading priority is primarily focused on cover condition because cover art encompasses much of the pulps' appeal and collectibility; back cover condition has low priority. Cover artists are often noted in items' descriptions. Because the magazines were printed on woodpulp and are 50 to 80 years old, they are generally browning with age; excessive browning or brittleness will be noted, as will the most significant flaws. The following CODES are used:

br: brown or brittle
bc: back cover
nfc: no front cover
sp: spine
t/t: taped & trimmed
wr: writing on cover
cs: cover partially loose from spine along edge
eg: edge
cc: cover creases
msd: minor spine damage
nbc: no back cover
ss: store stamp
tm: trimmed
ws: water stain
fc: front cover
t: tear
po: piece out
tc: title cut off
tp: taped
cx: xerox cover
min: minor
